William "Bill" Elkin
Bill Elkin did his undergraduate studies at Glendon College in Toronto and his graduate studies at the University of Calgary. He was admitted to the PHD program at Oxford University. He deferred his doctoral studies in the U.K. to accept a full-time faculty appointment at Queen’s University, where he taught Sociology of Education for six years. He attended law school at Queen’s, while remaining an adjunct faculty member and received his J.D. from Queen’s in 1983. He was called to the bar in 1985.
Bill has had academic articles, on legal and educational issues, accepted for publication in peer reviewed journals including the University of Ottawa Law Review, the Osgoode Law Review and the Windsor Yearbook of Access to Justice. His academic work has been reproduced in scholarly texts in the field of Sociology of Education.
Bill has practiced personal injury law for 31 years, focusing almost exclusively on plaintiff personal injury and insurance law. Bill has appeared successfully at all levels of Court in Ontario, including the Divisional Court and the Ontario Court of Appeal. He has conducted successful Arbitrations and Appeals at the Financial Services Commission of Ontario. His cross examination of a defence orthopaedic surgeon (during a trial against Geoff Adaire) is cited in Adaire’s book, On Trial, as an example of executing a winning cross examination.
Bill established Elkin Injury Law, Barristers, PC in 2003, which is a highly successful and growing firm in the Niagara Region. He has earned a reputation as one of the most successful and respected personal injury lawyers in the Region.
Bill has been a member of the Advocates’ Society, the American Association for Justice, the Hamilton Law Association, the Board of Directors of the Brain Injury Association of Niagara and the Board of Directors of the Lincoln County Law Association. At present, Bill is the Judicial Liason Committee representative to the Lincoln County Law Association in respect of Civil Litigation.
Bill has also been a long standing member of the Ontario Trial Lawyers Association (OTLA), as have the associate lawyers, law clerks and paralegals in his firm. In 2010, Bill was elected to the Board of Directors of OTLA and has recently been re-elected for a further three year term. As a board member, Bill has been actively involved in numerous committees and initiatives through OTLA and is presently chairing the Continuing Legal Education Committee and has been appointed, once again, to the Executive of the Board of Directors. Bill will also be co-chairing the Fall 2014 OTLA Conference.
Outside of his law practice, Bill enjoys skiing, sailing, cycling and playing guitar, as well as spending time with his family, friends and his boxer.
